Liposomes can be a very useful drug delivery system for infectious diseases. When liposomes are injected intravenously into the body, they are taken up by the macrophages in the liver and spleen. Animal testing has shown that liposomes packaged with anti-infectious drugs are active in killing intracellular bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The tested liposomes did not induce toxicity in the animal models, proving that this could be a viable method of fighting the spread of infectious diseases. [Citation 50]
