Liposomes can be used to deliver genes to a specific location in the body, which has the potential to serve as treatment or a cure for genetic diseases. According to an article titled, Gene Transfer In Vivo with DNA–Liposome Complexes: Safety and Acute Toxicity in Mice, "DNA can be introduced into a variety of cell types after formation of liposomal complexes with cationic lipids. In this report, conditions have been established to optimize the production of DNA–liposome complexes that efficiently transfect cells. The safety and toxicity of this method of gene delivery have been assessed after in vivo administration, either by intravenous or direct intratumor injection". There are many ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of liposomes as gene delivery vehicles. There is still much research to be done in this field, but liposomes display the potential to be very effective gene delivery vehicles. [Citation 53] [Citation 54]
