Generally, liposome nanoparticle therapy has been well accepted by the public because of its potential to deliver drugs and save lives. However, there are several ethical, legal, and social issues that surround liposomal treatment.

ISSUES

INSUFFICIENT FUNDING

Liposomal research is an extremely long and complicated process. Because of the size and unexpected properties of these nanoparticles, it can take years to engineer a feasible liposome. Also, since liposomal therapy is not well known among the public, it can be extremely difficult for companies to obtain funding. [Citation 34] [Citation 35] [Image Citation 34]

SAFETY

Liposomal therapy is a relatively new innovation in the medical field. Liposome drugs have existed for less than twenty years in America, so the long-term effects of the treatment on a person's health and well-being are unknown. Therefore all liposomal drug delivery vehicles must be carefully tested. If a drug contains liposomes, it must be indicated clearly on the label. In addition, liposome particles are extremely small and can be absorbed by the skin, which could lead to development of a rash or skin irritation. [Citation 36] [Citation 37] [Image Citation 35]

PUBLIC PERCEPTION

Although the research industry is very excited with future prospects for liposomes, the public's limited knowledge of liposomes could prove as a detriment. [Citation 40] [Image Citation 37]

REACTION RATE

Nanoparticles are often able to react very quickly. This means that they are very useful as catalysts, but they can also speed up reactions in unpredictable ways. If these particles are inhaled or ingested, it can cause lung irritation or potentially cancer. [Citation 38] [Citation 39] [Image Citation 36]
